AUTOSOLO

Follow a set route around cones on a tarmac or sealed surface where you are timed to the second.

Normally 3 goes at each test ( the best 2 to score ) and 6 different test in the one event. Any type of car can be used but it must be road legal. Normally a small size car will get best results.

Devizes & District Motor Club organise THE CHARITY AUTOSOLO during March.

12 CAR NAVIGATIONAL ROAD RALLY

These are held on the open road on a Friday evening and normally the route is 60 miles long.

Driver and navigator work as a team working out where to go and attempt to keep to a strict time schedule never being early or late. Any type of car that is road legal can be used ( from a Mini to an MPV ) as although the event is timed it is at 30 mph average and the skill is in going the right way. Unsurfaced tracks often form part of the correct route so either care or underbody protection is required. As the event is held during the hours of darkness good headlights / additional lights are a good idea as is a map light for the navigator.

Devizes & District Motor Club organise 7 events ( 1 a month ) during the autumn/winter/spring

20/20 NAVIGATIONAL ROAD RALLY

These are held on the open road on a Saturday evening/night and the route is 100 miles long.

As the event is held during the hours of darkness good headlights / additional lights are a good idea as is a map light for the navigator. This type of event is a step up from a 12 car rally having a maximum entry of 20 cars.

Other motor club members are invited to this event making competition stiffer.

NAVIGATIONAL ROAD RALLY

These are held on the open road on a Saturday evening/night and the route is normally 150 mile long. Driver and navigator work as a team working out where to go and attempt to keep to a strict time schedule never being early or late. Any type of car that is road legal can be used ( from a MINI to a MPV ) as although the is timed it is at a 30 mph average and the skill is in going the right way.

Unsurfaced tracks often form part of the correct route so either care or underbody protection is required. As the event is held during the hours of darkness good headlights / additional lights are a good idea. This type of event is the biggest held on the open road and often have an entry of 50 cars. Although not manatory most cars have additional safety equipment fitted. Other motor clubs are invited and the event is normally a roung of 1 or 2 championships making it the most competitive form of road rally.

SCATTERS

These are really a form of Treasure Hunt where clues have to be found – such as the time of the last post on a Saturday. There is no defined route, the event is not timed as such but crews normally have a maximum time limit of 2 hrs. The answers to the clue have differing values and the winners are those with the most points. They tend to be a ‘social’ type of event and often have a whole family in one car although husband and wife crews might ‘fall out’ !

Devizes & District Motor Club organise 5 of these (1 a month) on a Friday evening in the summer.

CLASSIC TOURS

As the name implies these are a gentle tour around the country side enabling the occupants of the cars to have a relaxing day, see villages, valleys and views that they never knew existed. They normally start Sunday morning with a bacon butty or similar, stop for a picnic lunch and then finish with an early evening meal. Any road legal vehicle can compete but as the name suggests the event is intended for older or interesting cars and it is not unusual to find cars produced in the 1930’s or 1940′ s taking part. This definetly is a social event and entrants always seem to help each other out. The organizer’s normally provide an easy to follow road book ( with instructions! ) and are on hand through out the day to provide advice and assistance if required.

Devizes & District Motor Club organise THE VALLEYS AND VILLAGES TOUR.

STAGE RALLY

These are events that are held on private land or closed roads and are timed to a second – the fastest crew are the winners providing they don’t make any mistakes. A proper rally car is required with several items of safety equipment being mandatory but they must still be road legal. Some events are run just at a single venue but the bigger events involve travelling from one stage to another on the open road. This is the type of event that is often shown on television. Several of our club members have competed on these events even at international level and have rallied all over the world. One crew has even won an event where as other members have had several top 10 finishes.

Devizes & District Motor Club at present do not organise a stage rally – but who knows what the future might bring about with the advent of closed roads going through parliament at the moment.

HILL CLIMB or SPRINT

These types of event are held on private land and are timed to less than a second. All competing vehicles must have certain mandatory safety equipment but do not have to be road legal. No passengers are allowed – it is just down to the driver. Normally there a few practise runs over the course before you are timed. They are often held at race circuits and several of our members have competed at Brands Hatch, Goodwood, Thruxton and Silverstone to name a few regular venues.
